Last month Bloomberg Businessweek sent me to photograph Cory Session, a social activist and leader of the Innocence Project of Texas.

His brother, Tim Cole, was wrongly convicted of rape in 1986 and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Before his name could be cleared, Cole died of an asthma attack while incarcerated. But he maintained his innocence until the very end. Even when offered early release if he would admit guilt, he never budged. After his death, DNA evidence proved that he wasn’t the rapist, and he was issued a posthumous pardon thanks to the unyielding litigation of Cory, who continues to work toward the exoneration of other inmates who have been wrongly convicted.

I only spent a couple of hours with Cory, but when I talked to him about his brother’s fate, he didn’t show bitterness or anger, thinking only of Cole’s death as a sacrifice that sheds light on the issue and helps gain momentum for others seeking justice.

Above are some outtakes and the one they ran.

Great, great work by a good friend for an incredible organization.
